ESF Europe 2026: Antwerp gives industrial transition a real-world stage

ACB Congress ESF Hilton 8

When ESF Europe 2026 came to Antwerp from 24 to 27 February, the fit was immediate. The congress is designed to strengthen the competitiveness and decarbonisation of Europe’s refining and chemicals industries, and Antwerp offered more than a backdrop, it offered direct relevance. As one of Europe’s key industrial hubs, home to the continent’s largest integrated chemical cluster and one of Europe’s largest seaports, Antwerp gave delegates a setting where discussions around energy transition, resilience and industrial renewal could connect to real operations, real infrastructure and real investment. The event’s positioning in Antwerp, described by organisers as the birthplace of the Antwerp Declaration, underlined the city’s importance in Europe’s industrial future.

That relevance particularly came into sharp focus through the delegates Port of Antwerp-Bruges tour, which extended the congress beyond the conference room and into the industrial ecosystem itself. The programme invited delegates to discover the chemical cluster first-hand, where companies including BASF, INEOS, Evonik and Covestro operate side by side, supported by shared pipelines, utilities and a world-class logistics network. Just as importantly, the tour showcased projects shaping the next phase of the transition, including CO₂ and hydrogen backbone developments and investments aimed at a climate-neutral future. For a congress centred on competitiveness and decarbonisation, Antwerp made it possible to move the conversation from strategy to scale.

That is also where Antwerp’s wider “innovation powerhouse” story becomes so compelling. Across the city and port, innovation is driven by close collaboration between industry, academia, start-ups and public partners. Antwerp’s sustainable chemistry ecosystem includes BlueApp, BlueChem, NextGen Demo and NextGen District, all designed to help ideas move from research and incubation to pilot testing and industrial implementation. Add to that the digital innovation capacity of The Beacon, and Antwerp becomes more than a host city. It becomes a living testbed for the future of sustainable chemistry, smart industry and clean technologies. For sector-specific events like ESF Europe, that ecosystem creates unusual depth and credibility. Delegates are not only hearing about transformation, they are standing inside it.

“Hosting ESF Europe 2026 in Antwerp has been a strategically powerful choice for our industry. As an event focused on strengthening the competitiveness and decarbonisation of Europe’s refining and chemicals sectors, Antwerp provides an exceptionally relevant setting. Its position at the centre of one of Europe’s largest integrated chemical clusters has delivered tangible value for our delegates, helping shift discussions from concept to practical context and enabling direct visibility of transition projects at scale.”

That practical value is exactly what made the event resonate. The organiser continued: “What has elevated this year’s edition is the insight it offers into Antwerp’s evolution as a major energy and chemicals hub. The city is progressing sustainable fuels, circularity and next generation cleantech with purpose, creating conditions where dialogue connects immediately to real world initiatives. Cities with strong clusters have a clear advantage in attracting specialised industry events, and Antwerp exemplifies this.”

From a destination perspective, Antwerp also delivered on the fundamentals that matter to international congress organisers. Accessibility, a compact city layout and strong venue infrastructure helped create an efficient delegate experience, while the support of local partners added confidence on the ground. In the organiser’s words: “From an organiser’s perspective, Antwerp has exceeded expectations. Its accessibility, compact layout and overall convenience support an efficient delegate experience, while venue quality and the professionalism of local partners have ensured smooth delivery throughout. Combined with the strength of the regional cluster, Antwerp stands out as a compelling location for future sector focused conferences.”

“ESF Europe 2026 highlights what makes Antwerp stand out as a congress destination: a city where industry, research, port infrastructure and innovation are closely connected. By bringing discussions on decarbonisation into the ecosystem and actively driving this transition, Antwerp delivered on the promise that ‘The City is your venue’, inspiring delegates, showcasing local expertise, and creating valuable opportunities for knowledge exchange, business connections, and networking between the sector and the city.
Tadeja Pivc Coudyser CEO of Antwerp Convention Bureau

ESF Europe 2026 demonstrated that Antwerp is not simply a place to host conversations about industrial transition. It is a place where those conversations gain depth, urgency and practical meaning. For congresses focused on sustainable fuels, circularity and the future of refining and chemicals, Antwerp offers something few destinations can match, a compact, accessible city embedded in one of Europe’s most important innovation ecosystems.
