46th European Congress of Cytology

4 - 6 October 2026

After 24 years, Belgium once again has the honour of welcoming a distinguished community from Europe and beyond for the 46th European Congress of Cytology. At the time, for a young resident, it was the first major international congress, and the experience was truly remarkable. It promises to be so again, as colleagues from across the world come together to reconnect with old and new friends, learn from one another, and grow together.

Antwerp has a long history in the diamond trade and is synonymous with brilliance. It is therefore only fitting that it hosts an outstanding cytology congress. The discipline is stepping into the digital age and will shine even brighter through the use of new tools that are emerging within it. Some of the brightest minds in the community will showcase what the future holds. AI-assisted diagnoses are already becoming a reality. Digital cytology will enable more efficient workflows, while ancillary techniques, improved classification systems, and patient-tailored treatments will lead to better patient management. All of this is made possible through minimally invasive cytology.

Antwerp is an old and distinguished city, as is the profession itself. Yet it is the new insights and the contribution of young colleagues that ensure its continued vitality. The global cytopathology community shares a strong passion for the field, and this congress offers an opportunity to bring together friends, both old and new, in a shared experience of learning and collaboration.
