Stadschouwburg Antwerpen

In the early 1990s, the Antwerp city council, led by Mayor Bob Cools, decided to expand the main auditorium of the Stadsschouwburg from 800 to 2,060 seats. As a result, the KNS, now known as Toneelhuis, moved to the Bourla Theater, leaving the Stadsschouwburg vacant.

In 1994, Geert Allaert of Flanders Eventhall and its subsidiary Antwerps Muziek Theater nv, now Music Hall, was granted the concession to use parts of the Stadsschouwburg. Four years later, the main auditorium was given its intended purpose through a major renovation. The roof of the building was removed, and the capacity of the main auditorium was increased to 2,060 seats. The new, larger capacity, combined with a mega-stage (40 × 40 meters + 82 stages + 2 side stages + spacious backstage area + loading dock + elevators + revolving stage), made the Stadsschouwburg the largest theater with a stage tower in Flanders and attracted major musicals and ballets to the region.
